A Falmouth chippy has had their application approved for extensions.

An application has been approved to extend Old Hill fish and chip shop - despite concerns from councillors.

An application was lodged for alterations and extensions to Old Hill Chippy on Glasney Road with a new flat roof extension to allow for increased preparation area, updated utility, and WC facilities. It was proposed to add a larger balcony and access stair to the managers accommodation to the flat roof area above the extension.

Falmouth Town Council recommended refusal of the plans due to concerns over the balcony and overlooking issues. The council said they were minded to support the other alterations.

However, this week the plans were given the green light by Cornwall Council.

The application reads:

"I believe this proposal will result in the enlargement and improvement of the business with a new, thermally efficient, cohesive design whilst causing no harm to the surrounding area. The proposals respect the setting of the site within the locality. The improvements to the shop and balcony will allow the business to thrive and provide better accommodation for the owners."

In conclusion, Cornwall Council's planning officer said:

"In summary, the siting, scale, design, and appearance of the proposed development is considered to be appropriate in the context of the existing building and the existing wider built environment. There would be no material adverse impacts upon the amenities enjoyed by neighbours. The proposal would not result in increased flood risk to third parties.

"The proposed development is considered to accord with the provisions of the Cornwall Local Plan Strategic Policies 2010 - 2030, the Falmouth Neighbourhood Development Plan, the advice contained within the Cornwall Design Guide 2021, and the advice contained within the National Planning Policy Framework 2021. The representations received have been taken into account and there are no other material considerations that lead me to a different conclusion. Consequently, the application is recommended for conditional approval."
