Farmers in Falmouth have been urged to be on high alert following disturbing reports of sheep being "professionally butchered" in local fields.

The warning was issued by Coast2Coast Farm Vets yesterday evening.

The organisation also recognised Helston and Redruth as potential areas where farmers need to be "extra vigilant."

A spokesperson for Coast2Coast Farm Vets said:

"Reports of people who have been acting strangely in privately owned fields, who are then approached and questioned, have been saying that they are picking mushrooms.

"Urging all sheep farmers to be extra vigilant for any suspicious activity and report to the police in the first instance."

Devon and Cornwall police commented:

"Police received a report of a sheep having been killed in a field at Higher Carthew, Helston.

"The flock were welfare checked on Saturday 7th October at around 5pm.

"One sheep was found deceased at 9.30am on Sunday 8th October. Farmers are asked to be aware of this incident."
