Falmouth Council responds after backlash from market closure
Last week there was lots of confusion and disappointment as Falmouth traders were told that the market that ran every Thursday and Saturday all year round for the last two years, will now not return until March.
Falmouth Town Council has now released a statement explaining that the market has always been over a period of 10 months but was increased to help get traders back on their feet after covid.
The council also claims that the cold conditions over the next few months have a detrimental effect on both the footfall and the conditions of the gazebos used by traders.
Falmouth Town Council gave Nub News this statement: "The Market on the Moor is a service of Falmouth Town Council and does not run without cost to the council and, by extension, the taxpayer. Falmouth Town Council provides most of the gazebos used by the traders and any electricity required by the stall holders.
"The council also pays a fee for an external contractor to set up and break down the market stalls. In return, traders are asked to pay a nominal weekly booking fee for their pitch to cover these costs. Unfortunately, there have been challenges in collecting payments from some traders, and several are now in arrears.
"Whilst Falmouth Town Council recognises the importance of supporting this community asset in the current financial climate, we must also be sensible. The gazebos are nearing the end of their life and will need replacing in the coming months, and the setup and electrical costs are also rising in line with inflation.
"It is imperative, therefore, that if the market continues to operate, it does so without further cost to Falmouth Town Council and, ultimately, the residents of Falmouth."
