A Falmouth resident is exploring ways cyclists can be better protected on the roads in the town.

Emilie Fontaine is looking at making a proposal to the council or a petition for cyclists safety after her husband was hit by a car yesterday morning (2nd).

Emilie's husband was hit in Falmouth as he was cycling up Swanpool Hill, at the intersection with Pennance Road.

The driver drove straight into him, stopped and admitted it was completely his fault.

Emilie said:

"Thankfully, my husband didn't get hurt too badly, just scratches and bruises and a big shock. We are so grateful that he had just dropped off our 3 years old at nursery, who ordinarily would have been in his bike seat.

"I am not trying to start a debate between cyclists and drivers but it is becoming apparent to me that the area (Falmouth/Penryn) is not a safe place for cyclists. There was a serious crash only last week in Penryn."

The incident that Emilie is referring to occurred on Friday (29th) where a teenager was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in Penryn.

Emilie has urged caution for drivers after this latest incident, she added:

"If you drive, please be careful, look twice, slow down and take your time.

"Cyclists have the right to be on the road as much as drivers but they can be injured or killed so easily. Our day could have been so much worse.

"Also, I want to say a huge thank you to the people who helped him and drove him home. We've been touched by your kindness."
