Falmouth and Penryn residents have joined a national movement by making sewing scrubs for frontline workers who are tackling Coronavirus.

The movement called 'For The Love Of Scrubs.' Which has been set up by A&E nurse, Ashleigh Lindsell based in the Midlands. There are now 23,000 members and volunteers coordinating the effort all over the UK.

The Cornish effort is led by Annie Lucas. Annie told Nub News:

"About a month ago a national group was set up by a nurse in the midlands and she identified a need for scrubs in her hospital so she set up a group to get people stitching.

"It has become a nationwide campaign with 23,000 people in the group because it has grown so fast regional groups have popped up in order to coordinate more locally and I volunteered to coordinate the Cornwall effort. We started about three weeks ago with a Facebook group and within a day we 500 people.

"In that time we have raised about £7,500 and set up a distribution production pipeline with teams of volunteers and a central hub in Mabe which is where all of our materials are stored and dispatched from and all of our completed scrubs are returned too and dispatched."

Annie is the owner of pop up sewing school Start to Stitch and Founder of Kernow Sewcial.

She added:

"The support has been overwhelming, this scheme has provided a focus for a lot of people who are stuck indoors and missing family and it is giving them something positive for them to think about. At the moment we are working at a target of 850 scrubs and that involves a lot of material and time, money and resources."

The group has grown quickly with nearly 1500 group members in 10 days.

There is 350 registered volunteer sewists and drivers organised into a production pipeline of teams stretching for Launceston to Penzance.

Annie continued:

"I have been really fortunate to have an incredible team of volunteers working with me on a committee to make things happen."

"The community response has been phenomenal and very positive, the coming together of the community has been extraordinary, it is really showing me that if you have a team with a shared vision you can make something magic happen, it's not just the people volunteering to sew it is the people volunteering to donate stuff, people volunteering to drive and the people donating money."
