Conflict has been erupting online as residents plan to venture into Truro this weekend to join the protest against the death of George Floyd and police brutality.

Many residents in Falmouth, Truro and around the county have been speaking out against the protest - thinking that it is irresponsible during a time when social distancing is important.

Just under one thousand people have confirmed their definite attendance to the Truro protest this weekend.

Many Falmouth residents have confirmed they will be attending too, with another 2.9 thousand people interested in attending.

Many arguments have been had between protesters and those against the demonstration.

One attendee wrote: "Regardless of whether people like it or not, it is happening. Regardless of a pandemic or not, it is happening. And people in Truro can either support it or not support it."

The police have spoken on the topic and have asked organisers of protests to let them know before they happen.

A police spokesperson said:

"As a force, we ask that anyone organising a vigil or demonstration contact us in order that we can help facilitate that expression of feeling, which occurs at a time of a public health crisis.

"I believe it essential that the core message of standing up against hate and racism does not become lost by behaviours that may be commented upon in respect of Covid-19, when such a tragic and significant moment has affected so many people in this country and worldwide."

The protest promises to be peaceful and obtain social distancing as best as possible, with the organisers drawing circles on the ground where at-risk groups can stand.

Many attendees have taken up self-employed volunteer roles of first aid and wardens.

Truro's peaceful protest is due to start at 14:00 on Sunday, Lemon Quay.
