Volunteers are being sought for a new community group to address speeding issues in Falmouth.
The idea was proposed at a Falmouth Town Council meeting this week (13th) by Cllr Dean Evans - who nominated himself to liaise with Devon and Cornwall Roads Policing Team to recruit, train, and deploy volunteers.
The group will be based in areas of concern such as Cemetery Hill, Pendennis Point, Trescobeas Road, and Bickland Water Road.
"Once we get going and people know there's a speed watch they might slow down," Cllr Evans commented.
Mayor Steve Eva voiced his support for the scheme - offering to volunteer.
Community Speed Watch is a scheme to allow volunteers to monitor the speed of vehicles using a handheld speed detection device.
The volunteers record the details of vehicles that are exceeding the speed limit by around 10%. These details are passed onto the police, who issue a letter to the vehicle owner advising them of the dangers of speeding, and reminding them of the law. If three letters are issued to the same vehicle owner, the police carry out further investigation.
All volunteers undergo full training from the speed watch coordinator and are provided with reflective jackets, signs, and a speed detection device. They are supported by a police officer and covered by police force liability insurance.
Volunteers wouldn't be expected to work a minimum or set number of hours. The number of deployments will depend upon the level of concern about speeding vehicles within the community.
The council voted to support the proposal for the group. Anyone who is interested in becoming a volunteer should contact Cllr Dean Evans through Facebook here.
