Today Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the conservative party, in the statement delivered outside Downing Street, she said she wouldn't be able to deliver the promises that got her elected.

With just 45 days in office it makes Liz Truss the shortest-serving PM in UK history, Truro and Falmouth's MP Cherilyn Mackrory released this statement:

"The Prime Minister has resigned – with a leadership election to take place over the next week. During the leadership campaign, I gave Liz Truss my support publicly because I thought she was the best candidate to solve the unique issues facing Cornwall.

"Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to tackle these issues in-depth during her short premiership. However, I wish to put on record my thanks to the Prime Minister for delivering the Energy Price Guarantee, cutting National Insurance, and pursuing a vision for a high-growth, low-tax economy.

"I shared that ambition, but clearly, some policies were not implemented in a way that secured the confidence of the markets and the British people. That is why, with regret, I feel the Prime Minister was right to resign.

"While the details of the leadership election are yet to be announced, I will make sure as before, that Cornwall is a priority for the next Prime Minister.

"I will be spending my morning tomorrow at a local food bank, providing support and advice to my constituents that need it the most."
