Back in August, Nub News reported that Cornwall had bid for £50m towards metro link between Falmouth and Newquay, it has now been confirmed that this is the only approved scheme out of the four put forward by Cornwall Council as part of the government's Levelling Up fund.

The idea behind the Mid-Cornwall Metro is to create a connecting service from coast to coast, this would include Newquay, Par, St Austell, Truro, Penryn, and Falmouth.

With nearly £50 million allocated to the project, it is hoped the service will reduce journey times and ease up the traffic road congestion for people living along the route.

Cherilyn Mackrory MP for Truro & Falmouth has been working on the bid with Cornwall Council, reacting to the news Cherilyn said: "The Mid-Cornwall Metro is one of the key projects I have worked on since my election in 2019 and I am delighted to see it gathering steam as the Government has today confirmed our successful Levelling Up Fund bid.

"It will give residents of Falmouth and Penryn smoother access to work and leisure opportunities on the north coast, as well as provide a direct route for people wishing to visit and work in our fabulous towns and university campuses.

"Thanks to Cornwall Council for working with us to deliver for Cornwall and we now look forward to going full steam ahead for this dynamic new rail route."

Jayne Kirkham the parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth also reacted to the news on social media:

"I am always delighted to welcome funding to Cornwall, but this should be a matter of local choice.

"When local people in Cornwall can't afford to rent or buy a home when they have to wait days for an ambulance when our frail and vulnerable can't get a care package when the sewage is being spilled into our seas and rivers daily, any new investment should be decided locally by local people, not on the priorities of ministers and mandarins up in Westminster.

"We cannot go on with this beauty parade of areas pitted against each other for short-term pots of funding based on criteria that Westminster politicians think are important."
