The Falmouth community gathered at Pendennis Castle as a beacon was lit for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The Platinum Jubilee marks 70 years since the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne in 1952. It was the first day of a four-day long weekend lasting until Sunday 5th June.

There were roughly 3,000 beacons across the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and the Commonwealth.

Residents turned out in numbers last night to celebrate the occasion. There was a performance from Nankersey Male Choir, a few words from Falmouth Mayor Steve Eva, and the beacon was lit at 9:30pm.

Addressing the crowd, Mayor Eva said:

"We are here to support a lady who has supported this country for 70 years. It's a big day for her and I'm very pleased to see you have all come out to support the Queen."

The Mayor took the opportunity to thank Nankersey Male Choir, HMS Scott, and the 6th Falmouth Sea Scouts.

The celebrations continue in Falmouth today (3rd) with the Mayor's Jubilee parade through the town leaving The Moor at 12:30pm and ending at Events Square. Then at 2:30pm there will be a tea party at Princess Pavilion.
