Beach goers on alert as venomous 'Jellyfish' spotted on Falmouth shores

Spotted in Penzance and Newquay recently, the Portuguese man-of-war has seemingly made its way to the Falmouth coastline at Gyllyngvase Beach.

Despite its appearance, the creature is not considered a true jellyfish. Jellyfish are a single organism, the man-of-war is made up of several organisms working together.

Man-of-wars are found, sometimes in groups of up to 1,000, floating in the water. They have no means of propulsion and the strong currents or wind can take them closer to the shore.

The sighting was reported to Ruths Pet Behaviour Services, Falmouth:

"One of my clients just contacted me after a late walk at Gyllyngvase Beach in Falmouth, the tide has left quite a few Portuguese Man of War on the beach.

"If you see these on the beach, put your dog on a lead immediately and take them to a safe area.

"Some dogs will try and pick them up, but they can give a really bad sting.

"The tentacles can be hidden under the sand. If your dog is stung, it is extremely painful so please be patient with your dog.

"The tentacles may be embedded in their skin, only remove the tentacles if you are using a towel or fabric to protect yourself.

"Wash the area with seawater and contact your vet."

This was not the first sighting and as they travel in groups, more are expected to be washed up.

Reacting to Ruth's post, Sarah Spreadbury wrote: "They are at Gunwalloe (Lizard Peninsula) too, on both beaches."

Sian Katherine Pickles wrote: "Spotted on Trevellas Beach a few days ago too."

Penny Mitchell commented: "Loads on Praa Sands yesterday."
