Welcome to the first instalment of Nub News Falmouth's "An afternoon with" series. These articles are all about celebrating a variety of businesses and individuals in our community. We begin our series with The Games Room.

Opening nearly five years ago, The Games Room has always set out to provide one thing - a fun time.

A modern take on the old school pool and snooker bar - it's an establishment that is unmatched in terms of pure enjoyment.

Featuring nine pool tables, two match ready snooker tables, two table tennis tables, air hockey, darts, shuffleboard and countless other activities - it lives up to its name.

You could, if you desired, play a game of pool, snooker, darts and monopoly all in one evening.

It's not often a bar can give you the sensation of complete escape, but Games Room does a very good job at helping you to achieve this feeling.

An active decision to have no clocks on the wall emphasises this further, time really doesn't matter when you're having this much fun.

Kathy St Quintin, General Manager of Games Room since the beginning, told us:

"I wouldn't work anywhere else. We're a real family.

"Everyone we have hired stays long term and that's because we treat each other so well. We want to enjoy what we do - and I think that really translates into how our customers feel".

According to Kathy, in all the time of Games Room's operation, she can count the incidences of someone causing trouble on one hand. Something unheard of in a busy, late licensed bar:

"I think what makes the real difference is that we all speak to the customers, we're a really welcoming team.

"I've trained my staff to not look at the door as people walk in. It's something I hate so much about pubs and bars, that uncomfortable feeling you get when you walk through the door and get stared at is enough to never want to go out again.

"We actively do not do that here, there is no sense of intimidation.

"If you're walking into a bar where the staff are going to talk to you and you're not going to get that dreaded death stare - you're going to come back.

"It really is that simple".

Never exceeding the allowed capacity of the bar is a must to Kathy and the team - with safety always coming before profit.

That being said, The Games Room has seen some exceptionally busy nights, with one event reaching max capacity four times throughout it.

A good mix of local people and students are also important to the success of the business.

"We have all walks of life coming through our doors. We might have a group of students doing shots at our bar, with a couple in the corner quietly playing chess, while another person watches football.

"It's that social mix that makes this place so great".

The Games Room is a genuinely happy place to be - for customers and the staff.

It's run in a way that feels natural, with simple guidelines and ethos that makes you understand why it has found a formula that keeps people coming in abundance.
