Welcome to the second instalment of Nub News Falmouth's "An afternoon with" series. These articles are all about celebrating a variety of businesses and individuals in our community. It doesn't matter how big or how small, we want to provide original coverage on those that are making an impact around our wonderful town.

This week we are with the wonderful, un_rap.

Hannah Pearce wanted to give the choice back to the consumer, giving people the option to purchase goods not wrapped in plastic, so she opened un_rap.

Falmouth's zero-waste shop encourages customers to bring their own containers to fill up the goods they need, rather than creating package waste.

Offering organic, bulk-buy wholefoods and sustainable lifestyle products, un_rap provides an alternative way to shop and live, giving members of the community an easy way to help our planet.

Hannah had the idea for un-rap while on a plastic-free, five hundred mile pilgrimage across Northern Spain.

The famous Camino de Santiago walk was completed without any plastic bottles or packaging on food - avoiding wasteful toiletries and using a bamboo toothbrush.

The walk was to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage and it got Hannah thinking:

"Why can't I walk into a shop without any plastic?"

Upon arrival home, she googled plastic-free shops and the only one in the UK was in Totnes, Devon.

After driving there and combining their ideas with hers, she knew she had to do it herself.

By the time un-rap opened in July 2018, it was one of thirty plastic-free shops in the UK.

There are now well over 300.

Hannah Pearce told Nub News Falmouth:

"It's been an amazing response from opening day - where we had the mayor cut the ribbon and Plastic Free Falmouth in attendance.

"From there it's been non-stop growth.

"It's got busier and busier and now we have created a community of our own".

It's recently been announced that un-rap will be featured in Falmouth University's campus shop - offering a two-metre table and a wall of dispensers packed with sustainable goods for students.

Along with loads of community events coming up and being shortlisted for the Plastic Free Awards by Surfers Against Sewage, un_rap is just getting started.
