Welcome to the third instalment of Nub News Falmouth's "an afternoon with" series. These articles are all about celebrating a variety of businesses and individuals in our community. It doesn't matter how big or how small, we want to provide original coverage on those that are making an impact around our wonderful town.

This week we are with Memorial Bee Hives.

Colin Packham, the owner at Memorial Bee Hives, told Nub News:

"My partner and I moved down to Cornwall from London in 2015, I decided to take a course in beekeeping via Falmouth College.

"I then proceeded to buy a couple of hives and learn more about the

bees, unfortunately, I had to go to a friends funeral and I was

astonished at the number of flowers that were being laid at the

crematorium, basically going to waste.

"I suggested to one of the mourners that the money could go too far

better use and I thought of a memorial beehive, "That's a great idea"

he said and I acquired my first sponsor there and then."

Colin also produces honey from the hives, each season a person who sponsors a hive gets three personalised jars.

Colin added:

"Naturally, I get a lot more customers for the honey, however, I've had

sponsors from far and wide, Norfolk, Liverpool, Essex for example.

"This is more of a memorial, like when people sponsor a park bench.

People can come and visit the hives but they have to be properly

protected in beekeeper's suits.

"Most of the memorial hive requests I get are for weddings or birthdays, people who are just in tune with the environment.

"It doesn't have to be for memorials, it can be for celebration as

well."
