Above the Bay at Falmouth Golf Club is the new sponsor of Falmouth Nub News - helping to bring local news to the town
Introducing the brand-new sponsors of Falmouth Nub News - Above the Bay at Falmouth Golf Club.
Established in 1894, Falmouth Golf Club situated on Swanpool Road is a popular local business owned by David Hughes which has an 18-hole course, a fully stocked golf shop, and a resident PGA golf professional. Alongside Above the Bay - a stunning modern bar, restaurant, and events space.
There is also a car park with 160 spaces, both members and non-members can eat, drink, and take in the stunning sea views in a modern building with great food.
Above the Bay offers a range of dining options from breakfast, lunch, and evening menus, alongside a bookable buffet menu. Enjoy fresh, locally-sourced food at good prices within a friendly atmosphere.
South West tourism award-winning Megan Walsingham is the Wedding and Events Coordinator. She told Nub News: "The food is absolutely stunning; head chef Shannon is brilliant. All his food is really colourful and vibrant – that has brought something new and exciting to the business."
The venue hosts weddings, quizzes, music nights, business meetings, and many more events. The bar and restaurant function room can be hired for all these events. There is also a vast outdoor space for members and non-members to use.
The golf club moved to its current home during the First World War. After the start of the Second World War, the old clubhouse and most of the golf course were requisitioned by the War Department and all golf stopped.
An anti-aircraft barrage balloon was moored where the new building now stands and some of the military buildings from that time remain at the top of the course.
After the war golf returned and over the years the course was reinstated and improved. In 2019 land was sold to pay for the new clubhouse which finally opened in November 2021.
Megan says Above the Bay stands out due to its modern, fresh style. She commented: "I have been to a lot of wedding venues which look tired. The facilities at Falmouth Golf Club are brand new. The function space is a blank canvas for weddings and events – people can put their own spin on things.
"There is a lot of space here. We can hold events for up to 106 seated people, without tables and chairs we can get 180 people in. It is a big capacity, at other venues for weddings and events it is generally 50-80 people. We have an inbuilt dance floor as well – perfect for a disco after a wedding ceremony, or live music event."
More important than ever, Falmouth Golf Club is continually evolving. This has been achieved with the new clubhouse, opening the space up for weddings and events to offer more than just sport.
Megan continued:
"We've got all the elements. This is a proper restaurant; we want non-members to know they can come and dine here casually as well as celebrating a special occasion such as an anniversary or birthday. It is all private too, the function spaces have bi-folding doors meaning various things can go on simultaneously."
"It is just a great vibe. Everyone is interested in what you are doing and very friendly. It is a great environment to be in," Megan commented.
One of the highlight events to look out for this year is the Falmouth Golf Club wedding open days. A chance to view the stunning function space set up as it would be for a wedding or an event.
"Sometimes it is hard to visualise how the venue will look on the day. As much as photos help, it is nice to see it in real life," she said.
The next wedding fair at the golf club will be in October. The rooms will be set up for a ceremony alongside local suppliers, showcasing flowers, dresses, cakes, and jewellery.
