In a new regular feature, Mayor Steve Eva and Deputy Cllr Kirstie Edwards provide an update on the things going on at the Town Council.

Both mayors will be addressing the community weekly writing about what they have been up to, their committees/meetings, and any issues/news affecting residents in the town.

This is what the pair had to say about the events over the past week and going forward...

Another quiet week for me thanks to covid shutting school classes. I've managed to chair the first Falmouth green corridor meeting for over a year remotely - it never ceases to amaze me just how many active volunteers Falmouth has, relentlessly working to protect and improve our green spaces.

The art installation and making space for nature project is almost complete at Tregonnigie Woods and the new pathway and boardwalk at Prislow woods behind Swanpool, is now well underway and looks to be complete within 2 months.

I also attended various other meetings and have been working on casework for residents, to help them out with various issues from trees to accessibility to road speeds.

Many things fall outside of Falmouth Town Council's remit, but it does sometimes help to have a local councillor send the right email to the right person to get an issue looked at. We can never make promises on issues that are outside of our jurisdiction, but there's never any harm in giving a little time to listen to a resident and try to help regardless.

My main priority again this week, has been pushing for a drop-in pop-up vaccine clinic for Falmouth, alongside our town team, the Mayor and Cllr Jayne Kirkham, who has been relentlessly fighting Falmouth's case.

We've had lots of messages from local hospitality workers, thanking us for thinking of them, which has been lovely - as I said in a meeting this week, it's easy to forget what it's like to work random split shifts when you have had a 9-5 Monday to Friday for years.

I worked in hospitality for many years, as do my older kids now - any schemes we run must be able to be accessed by ALL residents, not just some.

It was brilliant to see the dedication of Jayne, Richard Wilcox, and Richard Gates pay off, with our first drop-in clinic happening last Friday at the health centre. As I love to say "teamwork makes the dream work."

This week I have had meetings with the Town Council and together we have written to the NHS requesting a vaccination centre, to reduce the high level of covid cases in Falmouth at present, Cllr Kirkham is lead Councillor and with her CC hat on is having several meetings to deal with this issue.

I have been on walkabout afternoons and engaged with Police and Pier Master and both have indicated a rise in visitors numbers to the Town.

On Friday, I held a coffee afternoon at the Pavilion, where I finally had a chance to give donations from the Mayor's Fund to the charities I had chosen for last term. I had a lovely afternoon and it was nice to meet up with those who take the time to run these local charities and thank them for their efforts.

Each one a most worthy charity, Sacha would've loved it, Falmouth Royal Navy Association, Falmouth and Penryn Sea Cadets, Pendennis Brass band, Missions to Seamen, and Bosvale Community Centre.

Whilst at the coffee afternoon, it was great to see so many members of the public using the cafe and the gardens, it's all looking fantastic, well-done everyone involved.

I am proud to announce the I have awarded two ladies the Andy Hocking Award, an award for outstanding work in the community. Sarah and Tessa are the two ladies who have, for the last 16 months, pounded the beaches, parks, and town ensuring everyone was complying with covid conditions and at times receiving verbal abuse whilst doing the service.

Anyone who knows these ladies would understand why they have earned this award and I am sure Andy himself would have been proud of them.

Covid is still hitting Falmouth hard so we all need to be responsible and do our bit to stay safe
