'Unpretentious food made with real care': Nub News reviews Cafe Strand
Situated on Market Strand is a humble-looking cafe that seems like it might be your bog-standard eatery at first glance, far from it.
Cafe Strand, opened in 2018 by Jack and Matty is a modern take on a normal cafe serving up extraordinary food.
When the pair first moved in they had an issue winning over the local trade, with the cafe being known for being a greasy spoon.
They have certainly done that, with the cafe now almost full every time I look in and with a solid core of regulars.
I was recommended the Double Bacon Cheeseburger, and it didn't disappoint.
Usually, when I have a burger it falls apart, but this one stayed together so well which means less mess and keeps the flavour in.
At £7.50 for a double burger plus fries for £1.50, very reasonable.
Making up the burger is two homemade patties, bacon, lettuce, cheese, tomato, burger sauce all on a brioche bun.
The burger was juicy due to the thin nature of the patty trapping the flavour, with all the toppings you would need the burger to stand up well.
The bacon was crispy and salty, with the freshness of the tomatoes and lettuce it all works well amongst the backing of the sauce and the cheese.
The atmosphere is important when dining, the decor is modern and with music playing in the background means you can relax, you can actually find yourself spending quite a lot of time in there as it has such a chilled out vibe.
Also, you will notice that the cafe is exceptionally clean which tells you something about the high standards they hold here.
Matthew Riedel told Nub News:
"I went to America for a bit and became a little bit obsessed with In-N-Out Burger, super fresh and the farms are only so far away from each store and they do this press burger, the crispiness that you get on the beef.
"It is just a cool burger, I see a lot of burgers that are just a fat burger but it is just a bit of a different style. The seal you get on that meat gives it this texture that you don't usually normally get, a classic dish but make it a little bit nicer.
The big question, how does Matty describe the food in three words, he said: "Love, passion, quality" - doesn't get much better than that.
The pair also offer homemade ramen, which I will be returning for!
