This Falmouth pub is transforming into an off-licence

A Falmouth pub has announced that it will be transitioning into an off-license to be able to serve their valued customers during the lockdown.

The Moth and The Moon, opening again as The Moth License, aims to bring freshly poured draught beers and ciders that you can only find in a pub to an accessible spot in Falmouth.

The new off-license will be providing mainly local breweries and suppliers, while also looking to cater to customers that need gluten-free, organic and vegan beers.

Matt Reay, co-owner of The Moth and The Moon, told Nub News:

"Bottles and cans are great (of which we may have a small selection of), but many people prefer the taste and mouthfeel of freshly poured draught, especially cask-conditioned.

"I think that now lockdown is being gradually eased, people are getting out more, but still wary. We're hoping to offer alehouse quality beer and cider that you can collect in a very safe and socially distanced way, without having to go indoors anywhere (where the risk is higher), whilst out for a daily walk."

The off-license will offer collection two days a week, most likely Friday and Saturday, with a two hour opening period.

Matt continued: "We'll be handing collections out from the bottom sash of our bar window so if someone wants a quick chat whilst collecting, we can do so in a safe way through glass."

There are a number of other drinking establishments that have been running similar schemes around the county and Matt believes these will stay after lockdown has been lifted.

"Personally I think a lot of these schemes will stay, and run alongside regular pub service once pubs are allowed to open, as social distancing measures will limit the number of customers in a pub at any one time making it difficult to survive on just that income stream alone," Matt told us.

The pub will also add a small range of organic wines to the offering and eventually want to include a spirit, mixer, fruit and ice bundle for those summery afternoons.

Falmouth has already shown support for the lockdown move, Matt said:

"The initial response has been fantastic. Quite blown away by it.

"To be honest, I'm quite nervous about getting it right as it's quite different from running a pub, which is why we're not rushing into it."

The newly launched Moth and Moon was only open for a month before it was closed for lockdown.
