Ex-students from Falmouth School and Penryn College sign letter in support of 'anti-racist' change to curriculum

By The Editor 16th Sep 2021

An ex-Falmouth School student and Penryn College student have composed a letter to their old education establishments asking them to consider adding new historical teachings to the curriculum that will help support students 'to be actively anti-racist members of society'.

Isabelle Wilde, who attended the school from 2008 to 2013, and Anna Munden who attended the college from 2006 to 2012, is asking the establishments to teach students deeper into the British Empire - colonisation, slavery and the other roles Britain played throughout history.

In identical letters to the school and college, Isabelle Wilde and Anna Munden said:

"The Black Lives Matter Movement has highlighted the un-ignorable systemic racism that is entrenched in our society, making it clear that we must all actively work together to fight racism.

"Educational institutions play a vital role in anti-racist action. In rural areas like Cornwall where ethnic diversity is lower than national averages, it is important that schools work hard to ensure that students understand more about race relations in the UK and beyond.

"Currently, it is not compulsory in the U.K. for primary or secondary schools to teach colonisation, slavery, or any other atrocities that Britain played a significant role in throughout history—a role that is severely understated to this day.

"The Falmouth School website shows that students are taught about the slavery and empire, but these subjects appear in year 7 only, and it seems that overall there is a larger focus on other topics such as Nazi Germany."

The letters are being sent on June 15th and the girls are asking anyone who supports the change to sign their name in solidarity.

Isabelle Wilde told Nub News:

"There are lots of really useful online resources available to use if you want to call for a change to the curriculum.

"We'd like to encourage people to look at the brilliant work done by Impact of Omission and The Black Curriculum."

The Falmouth School and Penryn College letter have now both been signed individually over 150 times by ex-students and parents.

Falmouth School and Penryn College have been approached for a comment.
