Concerns have been raised over the number of recent beach fires happening on Gyllyngvase Beach.

A Falmouth resident got in touch with Nub News as the situation has escalated saying it had become a "real issue".

The resident who asked not to be named told Nub News:

"There's a real issue with open fires down there which heat up the sand which then remains hot even til the morning, people and dogs are burning their feet and each morning the council rep has to dig out the embers, also, the nails etc which are present in old wood remain in the sand which is a real hazard.

"That combined with the large groups down there each evening in breach of the COVID regulations."

Falmouth Town Council recently launched a new campaign called 'Sand Safe', a scheme aimed at keeping Falmouth's beaches safe and clean.

The Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team has also warned people about the fires on the beach, reminding people about the rule of 6.

The coastguard added:

"The amount of fires on Gyllyngvase Beach was concerning, there are by-laws that cover the Falmouth beaches regarding the lighting of fires.

"Unattended fires can cause a real hazard to the buildings on the beach and can cause a completely unnecessary call out for our local fire crews.

"The leftover burned material can pose a real pollution and safety risk not only from any plastics that might be burned, but also from any nails that might be left in the sand."

Falmouth Town Council has been contacted for a comment.
