Boss Andrew Westgarth was delighted with his team's display as his Falmouth Town side ran out 3-0 winners at Clevedon Town in the Western League on Saturday.

Town captain James Ward nodded the visitors into an early lead in Somerset with his first goal of the season, before promptly doubling his tally for both the afternoon and the campaign with a second headed goal midway through the first half.

A dominant Town added a third through Olly Walker's eighth of the season in the 38th minute, and the half-time score could have been greater with Luke Brabyn striking the post before Tom Annear's header cannoned off the crossbar.

Town had to settle for just the three goals in the end, but three hard-fought three points against a side who offered much more than the score suggested was music to Westgarth's ears.

"It was a brilliant win," he said. "It was probably one of the most complete performances we've had on the road. I know the Saltash game [3-1 win on Boxing Day] was good but I thought Saturday was brilliant. We defended really well, looked solid, and scored at great times, and from three set pieces which is always a bonus.

"They're a good side though. The strength of this league [is impressive]. I know it might sound a funny thing to say, but the two times we've played them, I know we've put seven past them [in total] but they're a very good side. 

"They're really tough and have some great players. They've probably been one of the better sides we've played over those two games, so I thought the boys really deserved that. We were in that game the whole time and they asked a lot of questions of us. 

"Barnesy [goalkeeper Ryan Barnes] didn't have a lot to do, but they kept the ball well, both of their wingers were very good and their captain up front was a real handful. We were just really good and I'm proud of the boys for riding that wave."

Ward opened the scoring after ten minutes, rising high to meet Tim Nixon's corner delivery and head home his first goal of the season.

The Town skipper scored a remarkable 13 goals from central defence last season but had failed to find the net in 19 outings this term prior to Saturday, but he quickly doubled his tally shortly after by nodding in at the back post from another corner.

"He's been so close on so many different occasions [this season] I was almost feeling sorry for him," Westgarth said. "He's hit the bar, he's hit the post and had them cleared off the line, but that's what he's got, he's a weapon. If you can't score goals from open play then set pieces are such a weapon, so it's a great tool to have."
