Football roundup: Falmouth Town edge closer to the title

A packed weekend of action saw big results for Falmouth Town and Penryn Athletic, and a local derby in the cup.

[H3] Southern League Premier South [.H2]

Truro City kept their slim play-off hopes alive thanks to a 1-0 win at mid-table Swindon Supermarine on Saturday. Niall Thompson scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half to put Paul Wotton's side within eight points of the top five with two games in hand.

[H3] Western League Premier [.H2]

Steve Burt and Louis Price scored for title-chasing Mousehole as they ran out 2-1 winners at home to Bitton. They remain four points behind leaders Tavistock after they put four past Saltash United on Friday night, severely denting the Ashes' own promotion hopes in the process. Dan Evans, Liam Prynn, Josh Parry and Warren Daw put the Lambs four goals to the good before Neil Slateford bagged a consolation in the second half.

Exmouth Town remain one point behind second-placed Mousehole after they won 2-1 at Helston Athletic despite having Aarron Denny sent off. Levi Landricombe and Ben Steer put the Devonians two goals up before Blues substitute Stu Bowker halved the deficit late on.

Elsewhere, mid-table Millbrook went down 2-0 at Wellington, with Miles Quick and Jake Quick netting for the Tangerines.

[H3] South West Peninsula League [.H2]

Goals from David Broglino and Luke Barner saw Falmouth Town edge closer to the west division title by beating ten-man St Blazey 2-0 at Blaise Park, avenging their sole league defeat to the Green and Blacks in the process. Liskeard Athletic kept their fleeting title hopes alive by winning 4-1 at Penzance, while goals from Charlie Young (2) and Kian Thomas helped second-placed Wendron United to a 3-0 win at home to Wadebridge Town.

Jak Davies scored a late winner as Penryn Athletic edged Godolphin Atlantic by the odd goal in seven at Godolphin Way to end a run of five successive league defeats. It was also a good day for St Dennis, who picked up their fifth point of the season by sharing six goals at home to Bodmin Town.

Elsewhere, goals from Bentley Alcantara and Ben Waters gave Launceston a 2-0 win at home to Newquay, while St Austell and Callington Town played out a stalemate at Poltair Park.

In the east division, Torpoint Athletic remain a point behind leaders Okehampton Argyle after running out 6-1 winners at Bovey Tracey. Curtis Damerell scored a hat-trick and Paul Heveran, Lewis Pacey and Gary Hird also netted for the Point, who have two games in hand on Argyle.

[H3] St Piran League [.H2]

Kieran Owen scored the only goal as second-placed Saltash Borough closed the gap on east division leaders St Dominick to four points by winning 1-0 at neighbours Saltash United reserves. Billy Hopcroft netted twice as promotion hopefuls Bude Town earned a crucial 2-1 win over fifth-placed Polperro to move level on points with their opponents.

Elsewhere, there were also wins for Sticker reserves and Torpoint Athletic reserves over Millbrook reserves and Morwenstow respectively.

In the west division, goals from Dominic Batchelor and Ashley Smeeth helped leaders Illogan RBL to a 2-1 win over Wendron United reserves. St Day remain four points back after winning 6-0 at Ludgvan, thanks to goals from Gareth Ireson (2), Francis Pengelly (2), Ben Murphy, and Ben Williams, while third-placed Mullion won 4-1 at home to Hayle.

Falmouth Town reserves were the big winners of the weekend, with Town putting eight past bottom side St Ives Town. Charlie Edney scored a four-timer for the hosts, with Connor Cooke (2), Regan Hull, and Stephen Owen also netting. Oscar Marks, Joshua Turner, and Sam Wickins were on the scoresheet as Truro City reserves won 3-1 at Redruth United.

Elsewhere, Steffan van Blerk scored the only goal as Mousehole Development won 1-0 at Porthleven, while St Agnes drew 1-1 at home to Perranwell.

[H3] East Cornwall Premier League [.H2]

Altarnun preserved their slender one-point cushion at the top after putting five past St Teath. Sam Smith opened the scoring and was later sent off, with Brandon Ambrose, Toby Knights, Alex Shopland, and Joshua Smith completing the rout. Ed Green and Jordan Stone netted as second-placed St Minver kept up the pressure with a 2-1 win at Foxhole Stars.

Gunnislake moved up to third after running out 4-1 winners at St Newlyn East, while a brace from Kyle Tamblyn earned a 2-1 win for his St Cleer side at Roche, who responded through Jamie Robinson.

[H3] Cornwall Combination League [.H2]

Matthew Stevens scored a hat-trick as sixth-placed St Day reserves won 7-4 at home to RNAS Culdrose in a thrilling affair at Vogue Park. Conor Bray, Jacob Williams, Matt Wysocki, and Mawgan Langdon-Heller also notched for the Saints.

Luke Wort scored twice as third-placed Mawnan won 4-0 at Goonhavern Athletic, Pendeen Rovers moved up to third after winning 3-1 at Holmans, while goals from Jack Casley and Bailey Stuart gave Lizard Argyle a 2-1 win at Rosudgeon.

Elsewhere, second-placed Penryn Athletic booked their place in the Combination League cup final after defeating Mullion reserves 6-3 at St Day on Sunday.

[H3] Duchy League [.H2]

Bude Town reserves are the new Division 1 East leaders after they won 3-1 at Dobwalls reserves, while previous table-toppers Southgate Seniors were held to a 1-1 draw at St Breward. The fourth-versus-third clash between North Petherwin and Boscastle produced a stalemate, while St Dominick reserves moved up to eighth with a 4-2 win at home to Calstock. Elsewhere, Polperro reserves and Lifton both recorded 1-1 draws at home to Pensilva and Saltash United thirds respectively.

Division 1 West frontrunners Nanpean Rovers' lead has been cut to two points after they lost 2-0 at Gorran and second-placed Lanivet Inn won 3-1 at Lostwithiel. Third-placed St Merryn were 1-0 winners over St Minver reserves, while Polzeath triumphed 5-3 over St Columb Major in an entertaining match at Callywith College. Elsewhere, Tregrehan Mills won 3-1 at home to Gerrans & St Mawes United, while St Eval Spitfires won 5-3 at home to Holywell and Cubert.

Just two games were played in Division 2, with second-placed St Mawgan reserves winning 1-0 at home to Biscovey, while Gunnislake reserves triumphed 4-1 at home to Week St Mary. Boscastle reserves were awarded the points for their scheduled match at home to Grampound.

[H3] Trelawny League [.H2]

Premier Division champions St Just suffered only their second defeat of the season, losing 2-1 at home to Praze-an-Beeble, who will clinch second spot provided they don't lose their final game by seven goals. Fourth-placed Threemilestone won 4-1 at home to Mawnan reserves, while Constantine were awarded the points for their game at home to Ludgvan reserves.

There were two matches in Division 2, Wendron United fourths put eight past Tregony, and second-bottom St Ives Mariners drew 2-2 at home to Goonhavern Athletic reserves.

In Division 4, Ruan Minor ran out 3-2 winners at Storm, while Falmouth United reserves shared four goals with St Just reserves at Penryn College.

St Agnes thirds, Dropship and Stithians reserves all advanced in the Russell Hall Cup, winning at Troon reserves, Lanner and at home to Mullion thirds respectively. Probus are also through after their match at Carharrack was conceded by the hosts.

Falmouth United won 3-0 in their derby duel at Falmouth DC in the Lockhart Cup, while third-placed Redruth United reserves ran out 6-0 winners at basement dwellers RNAS Culdrose reserves in an all-Division 1 affair in the League Cup.

[H3] South West Women's Football League [.H2]

St Austell moved a giant step towards the Premier Division title and possible promotion to the FA Women's National League with a 17-0 thrashing of bottom side Bideford at Poltair Park on Sunday. Charlotte Whitmore bagged a six-timer for Town, with Chevonne Johanning and Lucy Solloway also scoring hat-tricks as the Cornish side ran out emphatic winners.

The crucial result came in Gloucestershire, however, as league leaders Ilminster Town suffered a 3-0 defeat at Forest Green Rovers. It means St Austell require a maximum of nine points from their final four matches to secure the title.

Helston Athletic lost 3-0 at Feniton in the sole match to be played in the Western Division, with Liskeard Athletic receiving the points for their game after opponents Liverton United forfeited their remaining matches.

[H3] Cornwall Women's Football League [.H2]

Sticker are through to the League Cup final after they overcame Division 2 side RNAS Culdrose 3-1 at Burngullow Park, with Tori Marks scoring a brace for the home side. The other semi-final between Saltash Borough and FXSU is due to be played at the start of May.

Dropship booked their place in the Supplementary League Cup semi-finals thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Penryn, with Sophie Ireson scoring the only goal of the game.

Bodmin won 4-0 at local rivals Wadebridge Town in the only league game to be played, with Jasmine Allen (2), Gracie Davies and Cally Hoskin providing the goals in the Division 2 clash.
