Falmouth volunteers have attained national lifeguard qualifications to continue delivering lifesaving beach patrol service during off-peak periods.

RNLI Lifeguards provide a much-needed service to our local beaches during peak times, however, Surf Life Saving GB clubs, such as Gyllyngvase Surf Life Saving Club, provide voluntary water safety cover during off-peak periods, such as evenings, weekdays, and out of season.

The Space, Falmouth.

There are some new faces at a local gym in town, The Space now occupies the gym at Falmouth Sports Club after taking over in March this year, and is finding its feet as covid restrictions are lifted.

Taking the reins from the previous owners is Josh Kanagaraj, who sensed an opportunity to put his own stamp on things as the owners felt the sharp end of the coronavirus pandemic.

It will be a few weeks until the data is in, but first indications are that Cornwall's largest-ever sporting event, the Cornwall leg of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain cycle race, had a record audience and gave a significant boost to the local economy after months of lockdowns.

Initial estimates show spectator numbers on 5 September to be in the region of 170,000. That would make it one of the biggest opening stage audiences race organisers SweetSpot has ever had, and certainly the largest crowd for an opening stage in the last seven years.

The Chair of Cornwall Council has asked that only red, white and blue flowers are planted across Cornwall to help create a colourful tribute for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

Pauline Giles said that she has asked the council and Cormac, the council owned company which looks after roads and verges, to only plant seeds of red, white and blue flowers in the lead up to the jubilee in June next year.

Truro and Falmouth's Member of Parliament Cherilyn Mackrory joined a Parliamentary event thanking St John Ambulance volunteers and employees for their extraordinary efforts during the coronavirus pandemic, on Wednesday September 8.

Since March 2020, tens of thousands of St John people have given more than a million hours of their time to care for people in hospitals, on ambulances, at events, through community projects, and by helping deliver the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme.
