"Falmouth University is anti-racism": Vice-Chancellor speaks following racism allegations
Yesterday, Anne Carlisle, Falmouth University's Vice-Chancellor, sent an email to all students which included the line: "Let me be clear; Falmouth University is anti-racism."
This comes following multiple calls for the University to respond to allegations of racism and discrimination that have been aimed at them publicly on social media and beyond.
Allegations including multiple accounts of racism incidents on students being ignored and an overall 'lack of solidarity' in terms of the Black Lives Matter movement was causing much anger and frustration in students, alumni and some local people.
"We are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, is included, belongs and can flourish," Anne Carlisle continued.
"We recognise that there is always more work to be done and we want to do this in partnership with our campus community. In particular, by listening to our Black, Asian and ethnic minority students and colleagues."
We recently spoke to Mei-Li Mwamba, a Falmouth student who says the University has "very obvious lack of support for students of colour."
In a new statement issued on the Falmouth University website, it says:
"We are proud of our inclusive, caring community and recognise our institution's responsibility in supporting everyone within it.
"Both Falmouth University and our Students' Union are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels valued, are included, belong and can flourish. We know that everyone's experiences are different, but that everyone needs an equal chance.
"Falmouth University abhors racism, harassment and discrimination and we recognise that we cannot be complacent about attitudes and behaviours in our community and in the inequalities and injustices that exist in society.
"We also recognise that it is not enough, not to be racist, but that we must take a proactive role in being anti-racist. We have a duty to educate not only ourselves but for others around us and everyone at Falmouth has a role to play. We care deeply about this and have been working on some important projects and re-examining our practices and procedures.
"All at Falmouth recognise that we can and must do more."
The University says that they have been working with the Student Union to improve its "harassment reporting tool" and encourage every student to use it in racism, or harassment, either experienced or witnessed.
"We must support the Black, Asian, and minority ethnic members of our campus community by listening to and learning from our students and staff," the statement continues.
"As educators, we also have a responsibility to engage with the moral and ethical issues that are integral to our practice, our industry and the fabric of our society."
Falmouth University said that they are committed to widening access to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, lower-income households and other under-represented groups.
Students have been signing a petition holding a list of demands which they say will, "close the racial gap and indeed prove that Falmouth is more than just a 'positively engaging' institution for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion."
