A new underground restaurant is set to open in Falmouth run by two young chefs who are aiming to bring a unique dining experience to the town.
Harry Cartwright and Jay Brady are taking over the former La Cave restaurant on Mulberry Passage which closed earlier this year.
Harry and Jay are only 30 and 24 but both hold experience in top restaurants at The Pig at Harlyn Bay, The Mariners in Rock, and Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac, among various others.
The Mulberry opens today (15th April) and will be offering fine dining with an optional taster menu. There will also be a bar area with stalls where people can bring dogs.
In the bar will be a chalkboard menu with "nibbly bits" such as croquettes, arancini, mini scotch eggs, alongside a choice of four seasonal beers and a variety of wines.
Harry told Nub News:
"The food is going to be a mixture of meat and fish. Jay has come from Nathan Outlaw and The Mariners. He is passionate about fish and is one of the best fish chefs I have ever worked with. We are going to share the meat side of it as well utilising quality Cornish produce."
The pair were part of the opening team at The Pig. Originally, they were playing with the restaurant idea before going on to look at places in Falmouth – which is where they found the perfect home for The Mulberry.
They continued:
"Our whole careers have been working towards the end goal of having a restaurant. After joking about it we realised we had enough money to get the place. We have been fortunate that we haven't had to take any loans. Opening a restaurant with nobody to pay back is a huge bonus for us. It puts us on a very strong footing from the start."
"I have worked in a lot of Spanish restaurants in the past and I love tapas. We don't want to go with one cuisine, there will be influences from Asia, Spain, France, also some classic British as well," Harry added.
Harry is originally from Hampshire and Jay is from St Merryn, both said they love Falmouth and can't wait to slot into the town's vibrant food scene, adding:
"I don't think there is anywhere in Falmouth that does a regular tasting menu Also, I don't think there is anywhere that does small plates that aren't tapas. I think our experiences of cooking in various places will offer something quite unique for the dining experience in Falmouth. Being in this underground little atmospheric room - I can't think of many places like this."
The Mulberry will be open Tuesday-Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday dinner service only, Thursday to Saturday will be lunch and dinner. Sunday will be lunch only.
