Truro and Falmouth Labour say that Boris Johnson "must go".

It was announced this morning (July 7), that Prime Minster Boris Johnson would resign and a leadership contest will be held to decide his replacement.

At 12:30pm, Mr Johnson made a statement outside parliament confirming his resignation.

Nigel Morson, Chair of Truro and Falmouth Labour Party, welcomed the resignation of Boris Johnson as Conservative Party Leader but added:

"Boris Johnson is still Prime Minister and every minute he stays in that role brings the office into further disrepute. The Tories – like our local MP - who selected him as leader and supported him in spite of all the sleaze, cannot rid themselves of the stain of his time in office until a general election is called and the public have the chance to give their verdict.

"Labour is ready. We have a candidate in Jayne Kirkham who is standing up for our residents, working hard and uniting people across the political divide. It is time for a renewed Parliament, and a Labour government that can restore standards in public life."

Jayne Kirkham, Leader of the Labour Group at Cornwall Council and Parliamentary candidate for Truro and Falmouth commented: "Look around. Sick and injured people waiting in ambulances, our services closing down, hard-working people unable to afford homes even if they can find any available, and the Council is years behind target on climate change action.

"The country needs change desperately."
