A tattoo artist from Falmouth has been shortlisted in a prestigious art competition run by clothing and accessories company Bad Monday Apparel.

Derryth Ridge, 39, is a self-employed tattoo artist and works at Eclipse Tattoo Newquay; but during lockdown, she's had to adapt her business and is selling prints of her flash art to fans all over the world.

Derryth said:

"The Coronavirus outbreak has presented huge challenges for the tattooing community as we obviously can't deliver the service we love at the moment. The safety of our clients is a top priority and we're waiting for news about when we can return to business again. In the meantime, we're doing what we can to keep our businesses alive."

Derryth has entered a design in the @badmondayapparel flash art competition, which focusses on traditional tattoo designs.

It's a style of artwork Derryth fell in love with, having co-curated an exhibition on the history of tattoo art at Falmouth Maritime Museum in her previous career at the well-known tourist attraction.

Derryth said, "I've always been passionate about tattoo art and curating the Tattoo Art Revealed exhibition in 2017-18 changed my life. As well as having a tattoo of the exhibition logo tattooed on my thigh, which was then displayed in a 30 foot banner on the side of the museum, having immersed myself in the subject for so long, I couldn't let it go and

retrained as a tattoo artist myself."

Like many other business owners at the current time, Derryth is changing the way she works and has created an online shop to sell prints of her work. She says the art competition is a fantastic way to share her designs to a new audience.

Her design "Fire Girl" is available to buy via her online store.

"I'm delighted to be one of eight artists shortlisted in this amazing competition," she says, "Being able to share my art is a privilege and hopefully people enjoy seeing my work as much as I love creating it."

You can follow @Derryth13 on Instagram and Twitter and purchase prints of her work on her shop.
