New bottleshop and brewspace LAUTER, based on Killigrew Street, opened for business today.
Owned by Simon and Lucy, the shop sells craft beer and brewing equipment. They also have an on-site brewspace that will host brewing workshops and events, for beer enthusiasts and would-be homebrewers.
Lautering - a process in brewing beer, involves brewers separating the mash into the clear liquid wort and the residual grain. Lautering usually consists of three steps: mashout, recirculation, and sparging.
A few years ago, Lucy moved to Falmouth where she began running an acclaimed local craft beer bar and bottleshop. From there, she became an original employee of Verdant Brewing Co.
Simon has been running pubs for 15 years, and before moving to Cornwall worked at London's largest taproom and bottleshop (Beer Merchants Tap).
When the pandemic hit Simon could no longer work as a publican, and when the site for LAUTER became available they decided it was the right time to take the shop on.
The shop is really vibrant and unique, neon lights, vintage chairs, rock n roll music, it feels like somewhere you can select a beer and relax a bit, watching the world go past Killigrew Street.
A couple of things LAUTER will be offering in the near future is brewing courses so people can learn how to brew, take away the beer they made and the skills they learnt with them.
Customers can also soon take advantage of the LAUTER library, home brewing books can be quite expensive so if you fancied getting into it you can get a library card, scan a book and take it home with you.
Sitting down with Simon at their opening, he told Nub News:
"We have a clear idea of what we want the shop to evolve into, we are going to be happy to let the shop grow and take its own direction and see how it fits in the town.
"We want all our beers to be refrigerated, we deal with all the breweries very closely to make sure the beer is super fresh.
"We want to expand more into wines, we started off with a small amount of organic wines from Renegade but we want to expand the wine and cider selection."
On the LAUTER crowdfunder they have already sold between 40 and 50 brewing courses , "I ran those before in London and they were really popular, it is not just people who want to learn how to brew it actually makes for a nice experience day," Simon continued.
There is a homebrewing community in Falmouth with Simon and Lucy setting up a club of their own in the town at the end of last year.
As well as so many people booking onto the classes, the crowdfunder raised £16,253 with nearly 200 people pledging their support, a real "morale booster" for the LAUTER team.
"We don't just want to be a beer shop we want to be a place for beer education," Simon added.
LAUTER Bottleshop and Brewspace is open from 12pm-8pm - pop in say hi and have a browse!
