Yesterday, Falmouth Nub News reported on Falmouth Cyclovia, a campaign led by a small group of bike enthusiasts that want to close roads on the weekend to allow free reign for cyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers.

Paul Abram, who experienced the scheme first hand on a family holiday in Colombia, wants to bring it to Falmouth to promote exercise, community and tourism.

The scheme in Falmouth is currently in very early stages of planning, but the current ideas for the Cyclovia are:

* Cliff Road, shutting the road completely or just one lane from Gylly Beach all the way up to Castle Beach.

  • Shutting Castle Drive, with the entrance to Ships and Castles leisure centre and around Pendennis Point.

The idea to bring this scheme to Falmouth has proved fairly divisive, with many residents having strong opinions for and against.

"Really not liking this idea. There are dedicated cycle tracks, like the Bissoe trail, so why feel the need to close off some major roads just for cyclists," one resident said.

"Not a chance I would want this. If it gets proposed I will set up a protest against it! Idiot cyclists cause drivers and pedestrians enough problems as it is," said another resident.

There was also a majorly positive response to the idea, with many people feeling like it would promote a 'happier' community.

A resident stated: "It's a brilliant idea, and would make for a lovely, social amenity area that everyone could enjoy. Access for disabled and for those who have properties could easily be worked out."

Another resident stated: "Fantastic idea. General and open space for all to use, and help with social distancing. So many people buying bikes right now and we need to keep that momentum going."

A survey is available for residents to provide feedback on the scheme, you can find this here
