Plans to build 50 replacement holiday chalets, breathe new life into a former ambulance station, and expand a GP surgery car park are among the latest planning applications submitted to Cornwall Council in the week beginning August 21.

Every week more than 100 applications are validated by Cornwall Council and we have selected some of the more interesting proposals. All planning applications submitted to the council have to be validated and are available for inspection by the public. Anyone is also allowed to submit comments about the applications – whether in support or objection.

The majority of applications are decided by planning officers at the council under delegated powers. However, some applications will go before elected councillors who sit on planning committees. No dates have been set for when the planning applications below will be determined. They can be viewed by going to the planning portal on Cornwall Council's website.

Change of use from ambulance station

An application has been received to convert a former ambulance station on Close Hill, Redruth, into five business units.

The plan states: "The proposed change of use and minor alterations to subdivide the building into five small workspace units and upgrade and improve the visual appearance of the building is fully policy compliant with planning guidance at the national and local level.

"There is currently an acute shortage of small workspace in the Camborne Pool Redruth area and the proposed development will make a contribution to meet the need for new workspace units in the area."

Installation of 21-space car park at surgery

A part-retrospective application has been lodged by Portakabin on behalf of Probus Surgery for the installation of a 21-space car park at the medical centre.

The surgery is looking to expand its current services by installing a 625sqm car park to the rear of the site. The application follows the approval of a similar expansion application, decided upon in 2020, which never went ahead.

The expansion would allow the surgery to continue to operate at full capacity, with the new car park being used by both patients and staff. The proposed development will increase the number of available parking spaces on site. However it will not increase the number of visits to and from the site.

Building of 50 replacement holiday chalets

Kenegie Manor Holiday Park has applied to demolish chalet units and build 50 replacement chalets with parking areas and a sewage treatment plant at Gulval, near Penzance.

The development would not be occupied during the months of January and February each year.

Five new houses

Outline planning application has been submitted for five houses with access on land at the rear of Wellesley Farm House, Mitchell, near Newquay.

The site is currently a disused agricultural field accessed via an existing lane between existing dwellings near the A30.

Methodist chapel conversion

Plans have been lodged for the residential conversion of Treverva Methodist Church, near Constantine. The chapel was previously granted consent for a similar scheme in January 2016. However, that consent has expired.

The chapel is currently redundant and no longer used by the Lizard and Mounts Bay Methodist Circuit. It closed in 2012 and sold to a private owner in 2023. The Chapel is Grade II listed as of 1988 and was constructed in 1889.

The applicants previously lived in the Falmouth area and have young children who attend local schools. Their aim is to sympathetically convert the chapel into a family home. The proposed works involve the conversion of Treverva Chapel into a single residential unit with four bedrooms.
