A new petition has been set up in Falmouth with the aim of saving the Lollipop Lady outside King Charles School.
The petition reads:
"Cornwall Council's funding stopped years ago and she has been privately funded ever since, now it's time for the new generation to take over!"
The petition, which is set up by parent's Sean Stratton and Sam Westwood, has raised £400 so far and is looking for a total of £3,800.
We spoke to the parents about the movement, they said:
"The road is deceptively quiet and residential looking. It's very busy and chaotic at drop off and pick up times with huge buses and rush hour traffic pushing through the narrow area where the patrol is situated.
"Cars are parked on both sides of the road making visibility poor. Children dart across the road without thought of dangers, as they see their friends across the road and are excited to go to school or come out, this is the only remaining patrol near the school.
"The assessment system is not context-dependent and therefore misjudging where the traffic flow is not in large numbers - it does not account for the chaos, poor visibility and bottleneck situation that creates danger."
Back in 2017 when Cormac cut the role, the school's trust did not want to provide the funding in its place. Sean and other parents managed to find a private sponsor then, however, that will be ending this summer.
Sean and Sam said:
"We are hoping the new school trust, whichever they might be, will take over in the next year or so. Meanwhile, we need to keep the patrol in place for the next year and community funding seems like the best chance we have."
"The funding is all we need to keep the patrol for in place for another year since the County Council and Cormac, who now manage the patrol, are not willing to continue unless we provide the money. They are willing to continue managing it though.
"All over the country lolly patrols have been axed and where they've been saved or reinstated, it is usually due to PTAs and schools adopting the patrol.
"However, our school trust did not want to do this three and a half years ago when Cormac first cut the role.
"Falmouth continues to see rapid car dependant housing developments but little in the way of supporting infrastructure increasing traffic problems, the likelihood of road rage, the chances of a child getting hurt and the answer from Cornwall Council is to cut our school lollipop lady and others facing similar problems across Cornwall."
There are 27 days left on the Crowdfunder campaign.
