A petition opposing a proposed rabbit farm in Mylor is approaching 30,000 signatures.

The petition, entitled "Refuse Planning for an Intensive Rabbit Farm in Cornwall," stands at 27,287 signatures believing rabbit farming has no place in the 21st century and that the farm should not be allowed to come into fruition.

In early February, we brought you a report of plans submitted for a rabbit farm at Tregunwith Wood near Mylor Bridge.

If granted permission, temporary rural workers dwelling and an agricultural building would be built to enable the establishment of a free-range rabbit breeding and rearing enterprise.

The proposals outlines the development of a 250 doe, free-range rabbit production unit over the next three years.

The application has received over 200 comments so far on the Cornwall Council planning page, with strong objections to the plans.

The petition concludes:

"We cannot allow this outdated and unnecessary farm to go ahead. There is no demand for rabbit meat in the UK, most people are repulsed at the thought of consuming the UK's third most popular pet.

"People are in fact choosing to avoid animal products altogether in record numbers. There is simply no need for an intensive rabbit farm in this day and age."
