The Penryn duo that started the worldwide sing-along in support of Cornwall's strength during the coronavirus has announced they will be hosting a Virtual VE Day in response to all events being postponed.

Rachel Gerred-Hart and Shelley Peters announced on their 'Voices Of The Borough' page, which now has over 14,000 supporters, that a variety of virtual events will take place on May 8th to help people in quarantine to celebrate the end of the Second World War.

Virtual VE Day will involve a variety of social media experiences and activities, starting with an exhortation, last post rendition and two-minute silence by Penryn Standard Bearer, Matt Barringer.

The duo is urging people to make afternoon tea, scones, cucumber sandwiches and victoria sponge while feeling connected with the rest of Cornwall and beyond as everyone documents their experience on the page.

Residents are being asked to hang up bunting and wartime decorations on the day and upload photos of their decor in an activity the pair are calling 'show us your bunting'.

Further, throughout the day, there will be a children's arts and crafts competition.

The duo has organised Grace, a member of the well-known close harmony trio, The Hummingbirds, to join in with the Virtual VE celebrations - her song list is not yet decided, but the pair hopes she will sing a rendition of We Will Meet Again.

Rachel Gerred-Hart told Nub News:

"Shelley and I are overwhelmed by how this has been embraced by not just the Cornish but by those who feel a part of Cornwall for whatever reasons.

"The V-VE DAY seems to have really captured the imagination of lots of people and we hope this goes far and wide.

"We really want this to be as interactive as possible to draw in a sense of togetherness."

You can join in with Virtual VE day on May 8th by visiting The Voices Of The Borough Facebook page.

There will also be the second sing-along, led again by Will Keating, tomorrow after the NHS clap.
