This week the owners of The Cutty Sark Mark and Hannah celebrated four years at the helm.

The Cutty Sark has over 200 years of history, most of that time as an inn, previously The Albion Hotel.

The building was believed to have been built in 1810 for the Albion family, renamed The Cutty Sark around 1966 in remembrance of when its namesake was moored in the Fal Estuary.

With so much history The Cutty Sark has seen many changes in its time, but it remains a place for people to eat, drink and stay.

In Gloucestershire, Mark was working IT and Hannah was in finance, they wanted a lifestyle change and after the building became available and saw the potential in it.

In 2017, Mark and Hannah made the decision to take over as the innkeepers, along with Buddy the British Bulldog.

After the place had become a bit rundown they worked to restore it to its former glory.

Speaking to Nub News, Mark and Hannah said:

"We have resolved the reputation that is associated with its history. The rooms were never used as rooms for people to stay in so we transformed those into 10 B&B rooms, we have views overlooking the estuary, it is just a beautiful building."

What have been the best things about the last four years? They continued:

"We have made some brilliant friends here and just being by that beautiful pond out there. When we were renovating the rooms I used to go up to the balcony and just sit there looking over the harbour, you cannot beat it. It is just a lovely place to be."

Last year was meant to be the year The Cutty Sark really took off after a couple of years settling in, plans for murder mysteries, pop-up events, covid stole that but they came through the other side.

"We survived thankfully. We looked after our staff but what it did do was take out that big year. Saying that, the time that we were open before another lockdown was mental. There are worse places to be during a lockdown.

"We have a really nice bar area and the kitchen is reopening for service on Thursday (20th)."
