Today, the ribbon was cut to open a brand-new fitness facility at The Dracaena Centre in Falmouth.

The facility boasts state-of-the-art equipment, a spinning bike, leg press, squat press ladders and monkey bars, and it is all linked to a free app, so you can track your fitness.

The gym was officially opened by Steve Eva, the Falmouth mayor and Anna Gillet, Councillor for Penwerris.

Steve Eva, told Nub News: "We are a very forward-thinking council, we believe the price of going to gyms is just extortionate and we wanted to give a facility to the people to be able to keep fit.

"It is a wonderful facility, it is very high quality and it is completely waterproof, there are no electrics involved so, therefore, it can be used all year round.

"The main aim is to turn The Dracaena Centre into a sports hub, you have got the gym, there are indoor facilities, there are football pitches. Hopefully, within the next year or so, or two years, we are looking to have an up to date skateboard park out there, so you have got everything for the kids to do.

"Penwerris is one of the most deprived areas in the whole of Cornwall, there is a lot of people who live week to week, so this will be something for them to use, this is for them. Hopefully, it will be well used, and well looked after."

The project was discussed in Falmouth's Neighbourhood Plan and had been two years in the making with an estimated cost of £90,000.

Anna Gillet, Councillor for Penwerris, said: "It has just been my honour and privilege to open the outdoor gym with our mayor.

"I was having a conversation with a local resident who said it will be really helpful for him because he will be able to access the exercise equipment, he is suffering from a physical condition, so the exercise will be a real benefit for him because he can't afford a gym membership.

"This is what The Dracaena Centre does so beautifully, it provides top-notch services for local people, you need them. I am really proud to be here and supporting what they do."

A representative from the company behind the app, Proludic, were also at the opening showing people around the equipment and handing out free gym bags with water bottles in them. Nub News spoke to Ben James from Proludic, he said:

"The app is free to download on Android and the App Store, it plots the location of this site, so it shows everyone exactly where the equipment is, you can look at personal training tutorials on how to use the items and you can log activity and store it on there.

"It is a really nice facility, we have a few in the South West but this is certainly up there with regards to selection and range of equipment."

Also, a huge thank you to the team at The Dracaena Centre, who prepared refreshments for everyone afterwards.
