A Penryn-based vet has issued a warning over toxic algae in Argal Reservoir.

Cornish Paws said they're seeing more dogs coming in suffering after ingesting water from the lake.

They believe the lake has been contaminated with blue-green algae.

Cornish Paws also urged dog walkers to take fresh water instead and keep dogs away from the reservoir water.

Blue-green algae are naturally occurring cyanobacteria that often bloom on lakes, ponds and rivers (or other freshwater bodies) and clump together in wispy green, blue or brown bundles.

They can produce dangerous toxins that are harmful to pets, livestock and people.

A spokesperson for the vets added: "Dogs are at particular risk as they like to jump in the water for a swim and then lick their fur clean, but any animal that happens to contact harmful cyanobacteria blooms is at risk.

"If you see any of these signs after your pet has been in the water, or you suspect they have contacted with blue-green algae, please contact us without delay."
