This morning, local group Clean Ocean Sailing week embarked on a sailing mission to clean up 10 beaches in 10 days, taking 'The Annette' and other smaller boats to clean some of the hardest to reach stretches of Cornish coastline.
Clean Ocean Sailing, based in the Helford River in Cornwall is a local Cornish voluntary organisation that dedicates itself to cleaning our coasts and oceans sustainably under sail, raising awareness about ocean plastic pollution.
This week they will be raising awareness of plastic pollution on their 112-year-old schooner 'The Annette'.
Clean Ocean Sailing founder Steve Green, told Nub News:
"We went to the Scilly Islands last year and we were hoping to go again this winter and we'd had lots of volunteers booked on to go with us on the trip.
"Because of the bad weather we have been having this winter we have had to come up with a plan b so one of our volunteers suggested that we should cover ten more local beaches in different places for ten days without a break."
The group set off from Gweek, Helston this morning on the high tide at 8 o'clock, there they will try and find a sheltered spot on the east coast of The Lizard.
Due to the big winds and the threat of Storm Dennis, they will then move on to The Helford Estuary over the weekend.
The crew will then make their way over to Falmouth and clean up the Falmouth Estuary.
Steve added:
"We are really hoping some of this wind will drop off so we can get round to more of the inaccessible parts of the coast.
"It has just been storm after storm and its hard to find a safe place to anchor.
"We try to do everything by sail, so in these conditions that can be pretty tricky."
Clean Ocean Sailing want to raise £5,000 to fight ocean plastic. You can find out how to donate by clicking the red button below.
