Local barbers offers safe space for community
Boslowick Barbers, in Falmouth, is part of a Cornwall Council scheme that offers vulnerable people in the community a safe space.
Ellie McCann, who runs the business, has been keen to promote the safe space to ensure that anybody in need of support or a comforting place, knows where to look.
The space is available to anybody in the community that needs help. They can walk into the shop during the opening hours and a member of staff will give them support or help to contact someone that can assist them.
I spoke to Ellie's partner Sam, who originally suggested the idea of a hub, to hear more about why they decided to set up the space.
Sam told me he had heard about the scheme from another line of work and with Ellie previously working in a school and dealing with children who had been bullied they really wanted to help.
With children returning to school soon, Sam made the point that it would be good to highlight to parents that Boslowick Barbers is a place their children can come to if they are bullied or accosted on their way home. They can then contact the parents to come and meet them.
Sam shared that he and Ellie have also raised autistic children so they know exactly how important it can be for people to have a space they feel safe in.
While in conversation with Sam, it became clear how community-based the barber shop is, He said: "The place is for everyone, we welcome the whole family in, we don't just cater for older or younger people.
"We always want to help, you could come in because you need help getting home after losing your phone, or you could be being bullied and need support. We will provide whatever help we can."
