Welcome to Falmouth Nub News' living article, 'How do we bring normality back to Falmouth?'

Throughout the upcoming weeks, newly held interviews with key figures from the town's council, business and tourism communities will be posted here.

On 20th March, Nub News caught up with Falmouth's Town Clerk, Mark Williams, for a quick Q&A on how the town can begin to achieve a sense of normality in the months to come.

Falmouth residents should be wearing masks in public and Cornwall's #ComeBackLater statement remains, this was the message from Falmouth's Town Clerk.

1. What do you make of the current situation with the Government beginning to ease lockdown restrictions?

"Easing of lockdown needs to be a balance. We need to make sure that (a) people are safe and (b) feel safe to return to our town.

"The Town Team are doing a terrific amount of work with traders to plan for that. Some of the measures regarding sustainability can be carried through to the longer term."

2. Do you think residents wearing masks is an effective form of protection?

"Masks may be a part of that return. The CDC advises we should wear masks in 'areas of significant community-based transmission'. So yes."

3. What are the town's main priorities at this point?

"The main priorities are a safe and planned return from lockdown. With physical measures in place so that people can safely use the town centre and services."

4. How do we stimulate the town's tourism economy?

"Tourism economy stimulation needs to follow but not yet. The Please #ComeBackLater message remains.

"However plans are being prepared to assist the accommodation industry when we are ready."

5. What needs to be done to make sure Falmouth is ready for visitors?

"A safe and transmission free town."

On 10th June, Nub News spoke to Falmouth's Mayor, Steve Eva.

His message was that safety is the priority over everything else and that it will be impossible to please everyone.

1. What do you make of the current situation with the Government beginning to ease lockdown restrictions?

No matter what the Government does it will upset some people, in my opinion, the numbers in Falmouth/Cornwall are very low therefore a controlled opening of shops and services are correct but numbers closely monitored.

2. Do you think residents wearing masks is an effective form of protection?

Masks are no protection from Coronavirus but reduce the spreading of it they should be worn in buildings which can not allow for Social Distancing.

3. What are the town's main priorities at this point?

The priority is safety, safety safety.

4. What needs to be done to make sure Falmouth is ready for visitors?

All members of staff at the Town Council are busy getting ready to reopen the town led by all heads of department and me, we will always put safety first.

New chalk markings have been drawn on the street to aid social distancing in the town as Falmouth gets ready to reopen.
