A well-known Falmouth pub has undergone a rebranding - setting out to create a stylish and friendly environment for locals and visitors.

Formerly The Cutty Sark, The Mariners, based at Grove Place unveiled a new colour scheme alongside the name change.

New owners Deborah and Chris Hartley took over in November and have plans for further improvements to the pub with a new cafe area expected to be open by the end of May.

General Manager Jon Phillips told Nub News:

"People like it and it is going down very well. The name has a nautical theme which fits in well being on the harbour front. The new look is fresh, bright, and stands out on the street.

"The coffee shop is going to be the biggest change here. From 8am-5pm every day we will be serving breakfast, brunch, snacks, pasties, teas, coffees, smoothies, and ice cream. Because we are right on the end of Falmouth it is the first thing people see when they arrive in the car parks. Hopefully, people will come over and get a coffee or a snack."

The Mariners have also seen big success with their busy events schedule, including monthly quiz nights (which are usually fully booked), regular live music, birthday parties, Sunday lunches, and a Ukulele group.

The Mariners said they "greatly value" the history of the building and the pub, but they are keen to highlight the changing style of the business.

Jon continued:

"We are a very different business these days. We have 10 beautiful bed and breakfast bedrooms. We have talented chefs producing great food. The market has changed in recent years, and you can no longer just serve alcohol, you have got to be a place that does great food and offers good value rooms. It is a very different place from what it was in the 80s and 90s.

"We have a great food offering, and we will soon be serving food seven days a week. We do a really hearty Cornish breakfast with beautiful Cornish bacon, locally sourced sausage, local hogs, and black pudding. If a person is looking for a great start to the day The Mariners is the place.

"We have great live music on Friday nights, lots of groups meet up here now. It is for adults who want to have a nice meal and socialise in a friendly atmosphere."
