There was a happy ending for a dog and its owner after they were reunited by the coastguard.

Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team was originally tasked to assist the police with a road closure at Swanpool Beach, at around 5pm yesterday.

Team members closed off the path to Gyllyngvase and assisted with the road closure, once conditions had abated, closures were lifted.

As they were packing up, a dog came running from the car park to the beach and was caught by a team member as he was about to run into the sea.

A spokesperson for Falmouth Coastguard said:

"We had a look around the car park to see if there was an owner anywhere while another team member dialled the number on the collar.

"The dog had come from near Meanporth all the way to Swanpool on his own and somehow avoided the traffic and anyone spotting him on the way.

"The dog and very relieved owner were reunited and we then returned to station."
