Greenpeace Falmouth go blue for World Ocean Day
In what has been a wet and windy weekend across Cornwall, the sun came out to shine (mostly) for World Oceans Day.
Greenpeace Falmouth was at Gyllyngvase Beach raising awareness for an ambitious global project; the new Protect the Oceans campaign.
The project itself is to protect 30% of the world's oceans by 2030 and the Universities of York & Oxford have already put together a thorough report that maps out where these sanctuaries could go.
Tom Pine, the lead coordinator for Greenpeace Falmouth, told Nub News:
"It's modelling which parts of the Ocean could be most productive as a sanctuary without overly disrupting fishing needs".
Now we just need the United Nations to listen to the proposal and act.
The first step is to get as many signatures towards Greenpeace's "Protect the Oceans" campaign and pressure the government to take action.
That's where Greenpeace Falmouth, and hundreds of other
local Greenpeace communities across the world come in. Situated conveniently on the path behind the beach, a stall was set up by blue-faced activists; grabbing the attention of curious passersby. One woman attracting people to sign the petition was dressed like a fish. There can't be an event on Gylly beach without a little dab of Falmouth quirkiness. So why the blue face paint? The event was to end with a photo of those involved that would be sent to Greenpeace UK itself. Tom Pine, says: "What Greenpeace is trying to do is collect up a whole bunch of video clips of this blue wave that they can splice together to create a large promotional video for the Campaign." Across the U.K the public are contributing to Greenpeace's vision and, though a seemingly symbolic gesture, in the age of social media the importance of awareness across the internet cannot be understated. Spending an afternoon on Gylly beach reminds you what is at stake and why it's so important to remain proactive. The campaign has just begun and already has over 600,000 signatures.
