A huge ferry set to house over 1,000 police officers during the G7 summit docked in Falmouth this morning (5th).

Devon and Cornwall Police will be using the MS Silja Europa between the 11th and 13th June.

More than 5,000 extra officers on top of 1,500 from the force are expected in Cornwall to help police the summit of world leaders.

The vessel arrived in Falmouth at just after 3am this morning and will remain in port for around 10 days, with accommodation, catering, and other essential facilities in use for officers.

Just down the road at Falmouth Rugby Club, the operation is well underway, with around 60 staff set to be staying at the temporary accommodation. The car park/pitch has been transformed into a police base as the summit edges closer.

Speaking to James Dundon on BBC Radio Cornwall this morning on the arrival of the vessel and the G7, the owner of Falmouth bookstore Bookmark on Arwenack Street Tash Berks said:

"We have this big cruise ship arrive and below it, there are gig rowers, this is a typical day in Falmouth Harbour, our harbour is just magnificent. It looks good.

"From the view, I am on I can see the media centre, the ship, everything. I am very much a person that lives in the moment, I am not worried about it, just see what happens it is brand new. It could be fantastic, hopefully, all these media people read a lot of books and eat a lot of food, come into town and do some shopping."
