Cornwall is set to receive a funding boost for the installation of new electric car charging points.

The money is from EU match funding that will put 150 electric charging points in Cornwall Council car parks.

The move has been welcomed by Falmouth Town Council members as the town currently has one charger in Quarry car park.

Cornwall Councillor for Falmouth Penwerris Jayne Kirkham said the town was poorly underserved for public electric car chargers, and this would benefit residents/visitors in the town.

Jayne continued:

"If people knew they could come and enjoy Falmouth town centre and simultaneously 'fill up' their car, I think it would encourage people here.

"There is often a queue for the ones at Quarry car park and we need more there, which is a long stay car park convenient for the town centre, or at the other end of town at Grove Place car park or the Dell.

"You could visit the Maritime Museum, the art gallery, the library, go on a boat trip, have a meal and do some shopping while you charge. If there were some at Gyllyngvase car park you could even go to the beach."

She added:

"It is crazy that in the biggest town in Cornwall we still only have one public location where you can charge your car. That needs to change and this EU matchfunded scheme looks like a perfect opportunity."

Falmouth Town Manager Richard Gates commented:

"It is really important that the types of charging points are correct for the area/car park. Rapid charging points enable more cars to be charged in a shorter time."
