Falmouth has got its first dedicated orange wine bar – built almost entirely with recycled materials.

Rob Palmer and partner Toyah Marshall recently opened their second bar 'The Orgia' on Church Street – having run a successful business in Newquay for a number of years.

The word Orgia derives from Greek mythology essentially meaning "the worship of mystical things."

The Orgia, a French themed, shabby chic bar and kitchen offers a selection of orange (skin contact) wines, alongside high-quality white, red, rose, cocktails, spirits, and fine ciders.

Orange wine (amber wine or skin-contact wine) is a colour of wine produced by leaving the skins of white wine grapes to ferment with the juice instead of removing them.

"These orange wines are just insane. The flavour pallet they offer is incredible. They're so drinkable and approachable," Rob commented.

There is also a variety of options on the food menu from oysters to small plates, baked cheeses, charcuterie, and sharing boards.

Rob started work on the grade ll listed building earlier this year. Peeling away the covers on the walls the building started to reveal incredible brickwork and an old fireplace in the wall.

He told Nub News:

"We wanted to restore as much as the original building as possible. When I started work on it the whole building was cladded in wood. I managed to reuse nearly every piece of that. I'd say over 50% of the build has been done using recycled materials. I don't believe in ripping out a building and throwing new features in."

One of the key elements Orgia will focus on is being as sustainable as possible.

"Everything we have on our shelf will be grown from vine to glass in a way where we have the least impact on earth," Rob explained.

One of the ways they will achieve that is by serving wine from a box – something which a lot of people might turn away from.

"A vessel is a vessel," Rob said, "it is all about how it goes from that vine to the box, the liquid inside it will taste the same. Also, the wine in a box keeps a lot longer than wine does in a bottle."

"The carbon footprint from vine, glass, to the restaurant is significantly lower," he added.

Rob and Toyah spend a lot of time travelling around Cornwall visiting and offering support to other wine bars – as well as plenty of paddleboarding in Falmouth. Which made the location for their second bar an easy choice, Rob continued:

"We've always loved Falmouth and we visit a lot. Falmouth for me is open-minded and in touch with modern-day thinking. We felt Orgia and the wine bar would really suit Falmouth."

Rob explained that he's keen to take the snobbery out of wine and make it "fun and approachable" for everyone.

"There is no silver service here. It is a very relaxed place with a high quality of service," he added.
