People need to think about their actions and how that impacts on others and our environment, Falmouth Town have said following the scenes at local beaches over the Bank Holiday.

There were numerous reports and images shared over the Easter break of waste and fires being left at beaches in the local area.

Antisocial behaviour and littering over the bank holiday has been the main concern at Gylly with issues such as fires, broken glass and even human waste being left at the beach.

Plastic Free Falmouth was also on hand to assist in the clean up at Gylly Beach, working to cover 33 fire pits, 48 nails and hundreds of cigarette butts and small glass fragments, all these things posing a serious risk to beachgoers.

Speaking to Nub News the Town Council said user behaviour was particularly poor over the weekend and has requested Cornwall Council to create a Public Space Protection Order to make their enforcement easier.

Town Clerk Mark Williams told Nub News:

"Litter debris is an issue for marine wildlife and beach safety. Beach fires present a real hazard, are often left burning into the next day, and are often fuelled by materials damaged and stolen from nearby properties and businesses. Hot debris, nails and other hazards are left in the sand.

"Cornwall Council are the beach custodians but are stretched in terms of enforcement response.

"The police and fire brigade do respond to address anti-social behaviour of this kind, but are also extremely stretched regarding resourcing. We have requested that Cornwall Council create a Public Space Protection Order to make their enforcement easier. Byelaws already exist regarding open fires.

"People need to think about their actions and how that impacts on others and our environment."

Also, an issue over the weekend was the Gylly Beach toilets closing following a sewage leak, in an update Mark Williams added:

"The beach toilets at Gyllyngvase were reopened after the sewer was repaired. That repair proved ineffective and the toilets have had to be closed again. South West Water are looking to prioritise those sewer works."

The Town Council has also launched the Sand Safe Campaign to increase awareness about open fires, littering and BBQ disposal.
