Over the past few months, local residents have visited Tesco stores in Falmouth, Camborne, Pool, and Redruth to call on the supermarket giant to cut ties with forest destroyers, as part of an ongoing nationwide protest.
Members of Greenpeace handed in letters to the store manager from Brazilian Indigenous Leader Sônia Guajajara and Executive Director of Greenpeace John Sauven, outlining how industrial meat production is endangering forest communities, wildlife, nature, and our climate.
Falmouth Greenpeace also shared photos on social media of a placard outside the store, reading 'Tesco destroys forests for meat' and put up postcards about the campaign on the store's notice boards calling for more customers to join the campaign.
Scott Thomson said:
"I thought I'd be a bit nervous speaking to the manager, but the recent extreme weather events, from flooding to fires keep reminding me that action on climate change has never been more urgent. So I took the plunge and spoke out about my local Tesco's role in destroying rainforest to produce industrial meat.
"Afterwards I felt really proud to know I've taken a step to help future generations grow up on a safe and healthy planet."
As of early August 2021, concerned customers have visited more than 720 of Tesco's almost 3000 stores, with many more visits planned in the coming weeks.
Throughout May and June, Greenpeace volunteers also left stencilled messages reading 'Tesco meat = deforestation' outside more than 270 stores, including Falmouth, Camborne, Pool, and Redruth.
Activists also peacefully confronted delegates at Tesco's Annual General Meeting in June, holding giant letters spelling out the words 'FOREST CRIME'. Greenpeace has recently published an open letter calling on Tesco to "stop funding Amazon destruction".
Scott Thomson added:
"Tesco cares about their public image and their links with forest
destroyers are not making them look good. Customers don't want their weekly shop to cost the earth, so we'll keep bringing the message that Tesco meat = deforestation directly to stores until the UK's largest supermarket lives up to its promise to remove deforestation from its supply chain."
