The sun shone as Falmouth Sea Shanty Festival made a brilliant return after the pandemic.

The festival kicked off in Events Square with performances in the Breton Bash, Severn Whalers opened the new Church Street stage, and Bow Creek at The Seasalt Stage in Custom House Quay.

There was a variety of performances across the day including The Countrymen, Scown Roses, Anchors Aweigh, and Flash Jack, among many others.

There was also an opening ceremony at Events Square where Falmouth Town Manager Richard Gates and Mayor Steve Eva took the chance to say a few words.

Richard Gates says a few words at the opening ceremony, Events Square.

Richard Gates said: "There are 74 groups here and 25 venues. That is phenomenal. A huge round of the applause for everyone's involvement. The planning that goes into this to try and work out who fits where is just unbelievable. Three weeks ago we had a problem where the whole stage and marquees weren't able to go ahead so we had to re-source everything in the last three weeks. A thank you to James Hatton, Tim, and Steve Skinner. We would not be standing here (in Events Square) if it wasn't for them.

"Whenever all the groups turn up there is over 700 people that come as part of the groups. We put a welcome buffet on for them. Joules and loads of volunteers help out. Thank you to them."

Richard also issued a special thank you to main sponsors Skinners Brewery and Seasalt Cornwall, "you cannot be here enjoying this event without their support," he added. The Greenbank Hotel have also come onboard with their own stage and supporting the cup initiative.

Mayor of Falmouth Steve Eva added: "I want to thank everybody who makes this happen. However, Richard forgot to mention himself. Without Richard Gates, Vicky and the team, this would not happen."

The fun continues tomorrow (Saturday 18th) with a groups festival parade from Prince of Wales Pier at 11am, there are performances from Bryher's Boys, Cadgwith Singers, Culdrose Military Wives Choir, Femmes de la Mer, Hit and Miss, and the Gala Concert at Princess Pavilion, plus loads of other brilliant acts.
