A Falmouth RNLI volunteer has been recognised for his hard work after being awarded Pirate FM's Cornish Coastal Rescue Award.

Dave Nicoll first started volunteering for the RNLI when he was just 18 years old. He has been part of Falmouth Lifeboat Station for over 40 years.

Dave has been involved in countless life-saving rescues at sea. He was nominated by his daughter, Stacie.

The radio station held its 10th Local Heroes Awards sponsored by Ann's Cottage, to salute the unsung heroes who help make Cornwall such a special place.

Pirate FM's breakfast presenters - Neil and Saffy - hosted the event at Tregenna Castle Hotel in St Ives on Friday 13th May.

Speaking on why she put Dave forward for the accolade, Stacie said:

"I have looked up to my dad all my life. He's spent so many years dropping anything – no matter what he's doing or what plans he might have with his family – to help other people when they're in difficulty. I'm proud that he is so selfless and always puts others in the community before himself."

On receiving the award, Dave Nicoll added:

"Being in the RNLI is a huge team effort and so many volunteers are involved in saving lives at sea. This includes the shore crew who launch our lifeboats, our coxswains and crew who take lifeboats to sea, and the fundraisers who generate money to pay for vital equipment, maintenance, and fuel.

"It's been a real privilege to be part of the crew for so many years. It's humbling to receive this award after 42 years of volunteering in Falmouth, and to be put forward by my daughter makes the honour even greater for me."
