CAMRA which stands for the Campaign For Real Ale was founded back in 1971 by four ale enthusiasts and today represents beer drinks and pub-goers in the UK as a consumer organisation.

Earlier this month the Cornish branch CAMRA Kernow selected its 'Pub of the Year' for 2023, with nominations from members and undercover inspections carried out, 5 different pubs out of a potential 580 were put into a shortlist.

CAMRA has listed what criteria other than the condition of the real ale on offer were considered, this included:

  • Welcome received on entry
  • Service offered to customers
  • Cleanliness
  • Décor
  • Atmosphere
  • Whether beer prices are clearly displayed
  • Involvement in the local community

This year instead of just announcing the number one pub, two runners-up have been celebrated, a spokesperson for CAMRA Kernow said: "It was found that the top three performers were very close in score totals, as might be expected in a survey of what CAMRA judges to be among the best pubs in the county. So it has been decided to recognise the two close runners-up as well as this year's winner."

In first place was Falmouth's very own The 'Front which sits facing the water on Custome House Quay, on social media The 'Front said: "Thank you to all of our wonderful customers and staff for this amazing achievement. Let's keep the beer flowing."

It's no surprise CAMRA judges selected the popular waterfront pub as the best in Cornwall as they regularly share all the great guest beers they have on offer.

In second place was the Bell Inn, Launceston, while The Royal Oak Inn, Perranwell between Falmouth and Truro, took bronze.

Presentations of the awards will take place at each pub on dates to be announced. Meanwhile, The 'Front now goes into the competition to find CAMRA's Southwest Regional Pub of the Year, and if successful then on to the national pub of the year title.

A spokesperson for CAMRA Kernow said: "Regardless of what happens from here, to finish in the top 3 of around 600 pubs (the second largest number for any CAMRA branch) is an exceptional achievement and we salute all three award winners."
